Making the Smart White Gold Mens Wedding Bands Choice

Most of the pre-wedding hype about rings is often focused on the bride’s engagement ring, or even the ring she has chosen as her wedding band, but very little emphasis is placed on the groom’s wedding ring. Like any wedding ring, it is expected that it will be with you for the rest of your life, therefore it is important for both partners to be happy with their choice of ring. This makes choosing the wedding ring just as important for the groom as it does for the bride.

Before you go out even to look, you might want to decide about how much you want to spend. You do not want to go out, find the perfect ring and then be unable to get it because you simply do not have the money. Some people do consider these items to splurge on because you might be wearing them every day and they are one of the most special pieces of jewelry that you will ever own. Also some stores offer financing.

Other metals used in wedding rings include silver, platinum, palladium and stainless steel. Silver has always been considered the cheap cousin to gold so a silver wedding ring was said to be a ‘cheap’ ring often reflecting the state of the wedding itself. There is no doubt that the silver white finish that silver provides is popular – this is why white gold and platinum have become popular. Platinum is popular amongst the well-to-do. It is considerably more expensive than gold or silver and considerably tougher when it comes to durability. In fact, platinum in its pure state is the opposite to pure gold. Where one is very soft, the other is extremely hard and difficult to form into jewelry pieces. Like gold, platinum is mixed with other metals, this time to soften it and make it a little more malleable.

For those people with sensitive skin or allergies, either platinum or palladium is a good choice as neither is a common allergen. Nickel, however, is a common allergen, and so people may be allergic to their white gold wedding band. Although white gold made with palladium can be procured, it is more expensive than a nickel-based white gold, and jewelers cannot always guarantee a nickel-free product. There are some disadvantages to palladium. Although whiter and stronger than platinum, it is also more sensitive to dramatic changes in temperature as occurs with sizing rings, and may discolor or become brittle with repeated exposures to a soldering iron. Also, as with platinum, it can become less shiny over time and may need to be polished by a professional jeweler. However, this cost is likely to be less than a replating of rhodium.

Palladium is a good alternative to either white gold or platinum. It is more hypoallergenic and whiter than white gold while similar in price, and far less expensive than platinum. Although there are a few drawbacks to palladium, it provides an excellent alternative for a wedding band.
